Rotary awards Paul Harris Fellow

During the June 24 changing of the guard meeting of the Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary, awards were given out for Vocational Service, Rotarians of the Year and the Paul Harris Fellowship.

President Tera Guetter also handed over the gavel to Steve Carlson.

Among other purposes of the Club's Service Above Self Foundation, established in 2007, is to recognize the service accomplishments of Rotarians and others. Although Paul Sukke was a long-time member of the DL Noon Club, Breakfast club members felt his work had special significance to their group as he was one of the original sponsors of the Breakfast Club in 1989.

A Paul Harris Fellowship is one of the ways that Rotary International recognizes and celebrates those who emulate the service of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary.

To memorialize Paul Sukke, a Paul Harris Fellow himself, the Breakfast Club named another Paul Harris Fellow.

The Service Above Self Foundation Board recently appointed a committee, which screened nominations from the Breakfast Club for this honor. The screeners were given only two criteria - one, the award could not go to a Rotarian, and two, the person should exhibit the kind of selfless service that characterized Paul Sukke's life.

On behalf of the Service Above Self Foundation, The DL Breakfast Rotary Club of Detroit Lakes and the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation, Pat Peterman was named a Paul Harris Fellow, in honor and memory of Paul Sukke.

Petermann is the executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes.
