Fergus Falls downs sluggish DL Post 15 baseball squad

DETROIT LAKES - Detroit Lakes American Legion Post 15 baseball coach Mitch McLeod wasn't happy with the way his team played against Fergus Falls in a doubleheader on Thursday at Washington Ballpark.

With Post 15 losing the first game 8-7 and the second game 6-0, the team had little in the tank as the night went on.

"You can't attribute it to anything," McLeod said. "The bottom line is we didn't play."

He added that the heat, Detroit Lakes' schedule or the fact that the field needed to be prepped late after storms rolled through the city earlier in the day could have played a factor.

In the end, he said that's not an excuse, since the other team played in the same conditions.

"I'm not going to pinpoint anything and roll anyone under the bus, but it was a team effort," McLeod said. "We just didn't come to play."

Fergus Falls' win in the end came down to two crucial errors with two outs.

Post 15 starter Chris Gilson's error on a comebacker let Fergus Falls take a 3-1 lead in the fourth.

With a run already in, Conner Kerr hit one right back at Gilson, who got a piece of it as the ball was sailing over his head. Gilson picked it up and had time for the play at first.

He ended up overthrowing first and letting two runs come home.

Reed Oisted's error at short allowed Fergus Falls to bring in two more in the fifth.

Fergus Falls had runners on second and third with no outs. Matt Mithaugen's grounder went through Oisted's legs.

"We got killed again by errors," McLeod said.

Post 15 (10-13) managed to come back. Jake Kiebke's two-out bases-loaded double in the sixth brought in three runs to tie the game.

Two walks and an error by Fergus Falls starter Kyle Shaikoski loaded the bags.

The rally ended up being for naught as Mithaugen scored the winning run in the seventh after an error. He led off with a single and stole second.

Shaikoski singled to move Mithaugen to third.

Detroit Lakes scored three runs in the fifth. Oisted and Gnoinsky had RBIs. Ben Magnuson's fielder's choice scored the final run of the inning to cut Fergus Falls' lead to 5-4.

Before Post 15 tied the game in the sixth, Fergus Falls scored two in its turn. Andy Lee had an RBI double and Matt Duenow hit an RBI single.

Max Bentley was frustrated by one play in the second inning that could have turned the game around. He hit a hanging breaking ball from Shaikoski that ended up being caught by the centerfielder.

"I got (ticked) off and tried to hit the ball far," Bentley said. "It didn't work."

Gilson pitched a complete game in the loss, allowing 12 hits and four earned runs. He struck out six and walked one Fergus Falls batter.

As for the latter game, Post 15 came up short in garnering five hits.

The best chance for Detroit Lakes came in the fourth when the team loaded the bases.

A Gilson fielder's choice led to Kiebke being forced out at home and Conner McLeod grounded to second to end the inning.

Three straight two-run innings carried Fergus Falls to the win.

Joe Anderson had a pair of RBI singles -- one in the fourth and another in the fifth.

An error-prone sixth inning let Fergus Falls score its final two runs.

"I don't thing there was a lot of hustle out there,"

McLeod said. "Not a lot of fire. A lot of mental mistakes out there."

Doug Dickey had a short outing in pitching four innings. He's limited by an injury he suffered to a tendon in his throwing elbow that flared up in his second start of the summer.

"(It's) not so hot," Dickey said of his arm.

He allowed two runs and struck out one.

The only thing that can help Dickey now is rest.

"I need to take time off or something to get this thing back to what it used to be," he said.

The team will get a few days off before practice begins again on Sunday.

After that, Post 15 takes on Frazee on Monday at Washington Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 7:30 p.m.
