White Earth descendant headed to 2008 Olympics

Eighteen-year-old Jacob Deitchler, the youngest Greco-Roman wrestler to make a U.S. Olympic team, will compete at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

A three-time Minnesota state champion, Jake, qualified at trials in Las Vegas, winning a spot on the team on June 14. That date has special significance at White Earth, celebrated annually to commemorate the establishment of the reservation.

Jake, a White Earth descendant, is scheduled to participate in the opening ceremonies of the Olympics on Aug. 8 and to compete on Aug. 13.

"The White Earth Nation is very proud of Jake," said White Earth Chairwoman Erma J. Vizenor. "He follows in the footsteps of several American Indian athletes that represented their tribe and country in the Olympics. We wholeheartedly support Jake and wish him nothing but luck throughout the competition."

Jake is the son of Jason and Racheal Deitchler of Ramsey, Minn. Jake's White Earth connections include his mother Racheal, his grandfather Virgil Fairbanks of Mahnomen, and many other tribal members both on and off the reservation. His great-grandparents were Tom and Marie Fairbanks, lifelong residents of the area.
