Man arrested in stabbing may not be charged

A decision has not yet been made on whether to file criminal charges against a man arrested early last Wednesday morning after a stabbing in Detroit Lakes.

Joseph Warren, 37, of White Earth was stabbed in the left side of the chest. He was taken by ambulance to St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes, then transferred to MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, where he was treated in the emergency room and released.

The stabbing occurred at 12:02 a.m. Wednesday when police were called to an apartment on the 1200 block of Loring Avenue on a loud noise complaint. Before they arrived they were informed that a fight had broken out and a man had been stabbed.

Judd Duane Beauchamp, 21, of Mahnomen was arrested at the scene without incident. He has since been released from jail without charges being filed.

Assistant Becker County Attorney Gretchen Thilmony said Monday that "a decision has not yet been made" on whether to charge Beauchamp with the stabbing.

The County Attorney's Office has 48 hours to file charges on someone being held on probable cause in a felony case.

"The evidence we had was not enough to establish the person in custody had committed a crime," Thilmony said.

Witnesses are being interviewed and the case remains under investigation, she said.
