Otter Tail junk ordinance scrapped

After stiff opposition at four meetings around the county, the proposed Otter Tail County junkyard ordinance has been scrapped.

Strong opposition, mostly from rural landowners and salvage operators, resulted in full-house meetings in Pelican Rapids, Fergus Falls, Parkers Prairie and New York Mills, where more than 100 attended.

The controversial proposal defined "junk" as dismantled or wrecked automobiles, farm machinery, construction machinery, mobile homes, campers, travel trailers, recreational vehicles, boats and personal watercraft. Under the language of the ordinance, landowners with five or more vehicles would be classified as a junkyard and would require a permit.

Government intrusion on the rights of private landowners was central to most of the opposition. -- Perham Enterprise Bulletin
