Update: Lake Park man dies in ATV crash

A Lake Park man was released Tuesday without criminal charges being filed after he was arrested Sunday in connection with the death of another Lake Park man in an all-terrain vehicle crash earlier in the day.

Investigation is ongoing in the case and charges may be filed later, depending on the results of the investigation, said Becker County Attorney Mike Fritz.

The Becker County Sheriff's Department was called to the scene of the crash on County Road 1 south of Lake Park about 3:13 a.m. Sunday.

According to a Sheriff's Department report:

The driver of the ATV, Christopher Wade Carlson, 29, of rural Lake Park, was dead at the scene.

His ATV was struck by a pickup belonging to Jeremy Scott Nelson, 27, of rural Lake Park.

Nelson was not at the scene when emergency workers arrived. He sought medical treatment at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. "We were tipped off by St. Mary's, and he turned himself in after treatment," said Sheriff Tim Gordon.

He was arrested because of the possibility a felony had been committed, since he allegedly left the scene of a fatal accident, Gordon said. He was booked into the jail about 10:45 a.m. Sunday, and released Tuesday.

An autopsy will be conducted, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The case is being investigated by the Sheriff's Department, the State Patrol, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Potential witnesses are being interviewed and the accident scene is being reconstructed, Gordon said.

The autopsy results are expected sometime next week, but it will be 6-8 weeks for the toxicology reports from the BCA lab, which has a backlog of cases. A toxicology report, for example, has not yet been released for the woman who died at 10,000 Lakes Fest last month, Gordon said.

He would not release accident details because of the ongoing investigation.
