Letter: Lots happening at the Boy's and Girl's Club
We are writing this letter to update the community on the exciting things happening at the Detroit Lakes Boys and Girls Club. Our local Boys and Girls Club provides a safe and positive environment for children to have fun, learn leadership skills, develop career interests, practice life skills, and develop fitness and healthy recreational skills through the daily programs offered at the Club. These programs are proactive and goal-oriented with a lot of fun tossed in.
The Boys and Girls Club currently has 140 children enrolled in the Summer Camp program and has an annual membership of 605 children with a daily attendance of nearly 100 children involved in the after school activities and programs. The yearly member ship fee is only $25.00 a year which includes school-to-club transportation, snacks, evening meals and after-school activities.
Last year, the Boys and Girls Club served over 13,000 meals and served over 22,000 healthy snacks to our children. The Club is open 10 hours a day during the summer months, this is uncommon among other clubs around the state. The reason we are open all day is to give the kids a place to be while most parents are at their jobs. Many parents comment that they would not know where to turn if the club was only open partial days. With our current economic crisis around the country, it is no different on our budget with the high cost of food, transportation, additional staff and supplies for activities.
How can you make a difference? The Club is currently running a fund-raising campaign called "It Just Takes One - Back a Kid." You may have already heard from a board/campaign person or you might receive a mailing about the campaign. As everyone knows, it only takes one adult to change and enhance the life of a child. You can do that for one of the children in our community by making a donation. Your investment earns a direct return of helping a child become a healthy, competent and responsible young adult who will be a positive contributor to our community.
If it has been a while since you have checked out the Boys and Girls Club, this is an open invitation to you to come and visit. The children would love the opportunity to show you what they are learning every day while they are at the Club. You can contact Patrick Petermann at 847-5700 to set up an appointment to take a tour or just stop by anytime.
And, lastly, thanks to all who support the Boys and Girls Club during the year through volunteering, donations of all types, and participation in fundraising events. We couldn't do it without you. --
