Man charged with assault by strangulation

John William Butcher, 25, of 28050 490th Ave., Ponsford has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony domestic assault and felony domestic assault by strangulation.

According to court records: Early Wednesday morning, law enforcement officers were investigating a burned vehicle at Pine Point that was registered to Butcher.

When they called his residence, he allegedly answered in a very intoxicated and belligerent manner, and the officer on the phone could hear a woman in the background crying and yelling for help.

Officers immediately went to the residence and allegedly saw Butcher about to hit the woman, who was down on the kitchen floor. They burst into the house, and when Butcher angrily turned and appeared ready to hit an officer, a deputy shot him with a taser gun.

He was obviously intoxicated and tried to fight with the four officers on the scene as he was being taken to a squad car. On the way to jail, the squad had to stop and an officer applied hobbling devices to stop him from kicking and pounding on the windows.

The woman said he had come home while she was sleeping in the living room with their 6-year-old granddaughter. He allegedly woke her by throwing a bottle of glue at her face, then dragged her into the kitchen by her hair. He punched her in the face a number of times while she was crouched by the refrigerator, and kicked her in the face a number of times while wearing shoes.

The phone cord was around her neck, he had allegedly ripped it out after the call from police and wrapped it around her neck. The 6-year-old allegedly corroborated the woman's story.

Butcher appeared Wednesday before District Judge Lisa Borgen, who set bail at $30,000, with a number of conditions, including no contact with the victim. His next court appearance is Sept. 2.
