DL to host horticulture workshop

Want to learn about floral designs and exhibits or become a judge for the Horticulture Society? Lakes Homes is hosting the exhibiting and judging workshop, sponsored by the Minnesota State Horticultural Society, on Saturday, Sept. 13.

Lakes Homes Executive Administrator Tom Reiffenberger said the district horticultural society approached him about hosting the event, and he "took it on and was able to find some good speakers."

Chuck Levine of Roseville and MaryDon Beeson of Nisswa are the featured instructors for the Saturday event, which will be held in Lakes Homes office, 847 Highway 10 East in Detroit Lakes.

Reiffenberger said he wanted to find instructors from out of town because of the fresh ideas they could bring to the area.

During the certified course, participants will learn how to design floral arrangements for home or to exhibit at flower shows. Participants will gain an understanding of design techniques using fresh materials from the garden, as well as learn how a show judge evaluates the exhibits. The program will also teach the point scoring method for judging fall flowers including mums, dahlias and more.

Reiffenberger said those wishing to participate should bring a floral design and a horticulture exhibit to the workshop. He added that they will be taught "hands on practice" with the point scoring of exhibits. The instructors will be bringing designs as well.

He said he's been involved in horticulture to "promote it with our residents -- especially on a county level. Horticulture is therapy -- that's a big part with residents."

Detroit Lakes will play host to the Horticulture Show in 2010.

The workshop will be held at Lakes Homes, Inc., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with registration opening at 8, on Sept. 13. Registration fee is $25 and includes lunch. For more info or to register, contact Reiffenberger at 847-5642.
