Tuesday is the day to vote

Want to have a say in who your political party puts on the ballot for the Nov. 4 general elections?

Then Tuesday is the time to stand up and say so. Primary elections to determine who will be on the ballot for four federal and state offices will take place this Tuesday, Sept. 9, at locations throughout Becker County.

The U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Norm Coleman is also being sought by fellow Republican Jack Shephard of St. Paul. Coleman's endorsed Democratic challenger, Al Franken, will be joined on the primary ballot by fellow Democrats Dick Franson and Ole Savior, both of Minneapolis; Alve Erickson of Chisholm, Minn.; Priscilla Lord Faris of St. Paul; and Bob Larson of South St. Paul, who are all seeking the post, as are Independence Party candidates Kurt Anderson and Jack Uldrich of Minneapolis, Dean Barkley of Plymouth, Doug Williams of Chaska, Bill Dahn of St. Paul, Darrel Stanton of Eden Prairie and Stephen Williams of Austin, Minn.

Primary elections follow a strictly "party-line" ballot, meaning that you cannot vote for candidates of more than one party, said Becker County Auditor-Treasurer Ryan Tangen.

Also on the ballot will be the U.S. House of Representatives seat currently held by Collin Peterson of Detroit Lakes. Peterson is the lone Democrat on the ballot, though there are two Republicans seeking a spot on the ballot in November: Alan Roebke of Alexandria and Glen Menze of Starbuck.

There are two non-partisan offices that will also be on the ballot, Tangen said. Two judges' seats in Judicial Districts 3 and 4 will be on the ballot as well.

Polling times and locations vary; for more information, call the Becker County Auditor-Treasurer's Office at 218-846-7301 or visit the county's Web site, (look in the Auditor-Treasurer's section).
