Two area farms participating in alpaca tour

The fifth annual Alpacas of Minnesota Farm Tour will be held Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

More than 50 member farms of Alpacas of Minnesota will open their farms to the public.  This is a once-a-year opportunity for the public to visit alpaca farms in their area to learn more about raising alpacas, their products, and the alpaca-lifestyle.

Two area farms are participating:

-- Mark and Vicki Haugen operate Rolling Oaks Farm south of Hawley. The address is 27481 60th Ave. S., Hawley. The number is 218-937-5588

From Hawley, take Highway 10 east two miles to Highway 32. Go five miles south to 60th Ave. (also County Road 119), Then east 1.5 miles to the farm.

Alpacas are members of the Camelid family, along with llamas and camels.  They are gentle and low-maintenance livestock that can be raised on very small acreage.

Alpacas are unique fiber animals with 22 natural colors and variations. They are approximately one third the size of llamas and produce one of the most luxurious and strong fibers in the world.

Their cashmere-like fleece is several times warmer than wool and does not contain lanolin. Alpaca fiber may be the perfect alternative for people who prefer natural fibers, but are unable to wear wool. The alpaca industry has grown significantly in the past 15 years throughout the US and the world.

Participating farms throughout are listed at

Events at individual farms will vary. Activities may include educational sessions, children's activities or fiber related demos such as spinning, weaving or knitting.

Many farms will be selling alpaca related products.  There's something for everyone in the family -- raw fiber, roving, yarn (hand or machine spun), and garments made from alpaca fibers may be available.  Many farms will have the renowned alpaca teddy bears available for purchase.

Alpacas of Minnesota invites you to visit and experience these wonderful animals at a farm near you.

Local farms participating are located in the Detroit Lakes, Hawley, and Wadena areas.  Come and enjoy the autumn colors and the soothing sound of humming alpacas.
