Hearings set Oct. 1 on wheat check-off referendum vote
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council will hold a series of hearings for interested growers to explain the upcoming referendum on the wheat check-off.
The hearings will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at three locations, connected via video conferencing.
n Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Conference Room A-512, 1414 College Way, Fergus Falls.
n Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council Office, 2600 Wheat Drive, Red Lake Fall.
n Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Orville Freeman Office Building Room B-145, 625 Robert Street North, St. Paul.
The Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council has proposed to change the wheat check-off to 0.5 percent of the net sale value. The present check-off rate is one cent per bushel.
Through an automatic check-off program, farmers pay a percentage of their sale proceeds to their commodity council.
Commodity councils use these funds to pay for promotion, communication and research activities aimed at increasing crop value for growers.
