Rain halts sugar beet harvest

A wet weekend has brought the Red River Valley sugar beet harvest to a halt.

American Crystal Sugar Company spokesman Jeff Schweitzer told WDAY AM Radio News that even under a best-case scenario, the harvest won't resume for several days.

Right now, the harvest is 68 percent complete. American Crystal growers plan to harvest 420,000 acres of sugar beets this year.

Schweitzer said weekend rains brought the harvest to a "screeching halt" and under the best-case scenario the harvest could start again Thursday or Friday.
