Crisis Center breakfast is Nov. 12

For the third year in a row, the Lakes Crisis & Resource Center (LCRC) will be hosting its annual Children's Breakfast on Wednesday, Nov. 12 from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., at the Speak Easy in Detroit Lakes.

For the past couple of years, this breakfast has served as "a wake-up call to the community," by focusing on the needs of children who have been physically, sexually or emotionally abused as well as those who have witnessed violence in their homes. And this year, the need is greater than ever.

"Since the inception of our children's services program in March 2007, our staff has worked with 462 at-risk children," says Jan Logan, executive director of the LCRC.

"Because of the increasing demand for support groups in the schools of Becker County, we had to add another part-time staff member to facilitate these groups."

What makes this need all the more critical, Logan adds, is the fact that the children's services program at LCRC is not state funded. "We wrote grants to get the program going, but we need the support of the community for ongoing services," she explained.

Keynote speakers for this year's breakfast will include an as-yet-unidentified child abuse victim who has utilized the Crisis Center's services to begin the road to recovery, and Dr. Arnie Graff, a former Detroit Lakes-area physician who now serves as the medical director for Red River Children's Advocacy in Fargo.

By purchasing a ticket to attend the breakfast, area residents will be supporting the efforts of the LCRC in working with area schools on behalf of at-risk children, facilitating support groups and services for them.

"Children are the innocent victims of adults' dysfunction," Logan says, adding, "Your support of this event will directly help the most vulnerable people in our community, our children."

Tickets for the breakfast are $40 -- the equivalent of one hour of support services for an at-risk child, according to Logan. Those wishing to contribute more toward the cause may do so by purchasing a sponsorship, in categories ranging from $150 to over $500.
