Man sentenced for felony DWI

Donald Carl Butzin, 47. Of 6440 92nd St., Motley, has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony first-degree DWI, .08 or more.

A second felony first degree DWI charge was dropped in a plea agreement, along with a gross misdemeanor charge of driving after his license was canceled and a misdemeanor charge of failure to provide vehicle insurance.

On the evening of Feb. 15, a police officer observed him driving erratically near the Holiday station in Detroit Lakes. His blood alcohol level tested at .16 percent. He has three prior DWI convictions over the past 10 years.

On Wednesday, District Judge Joe Evans sentenced him to 42 months in prison, execution of sentence stayed seven years. He was placed on supervised probation for seven years.

He must serve 180 days in jail, 90 days at one time, and the remaining 90 days in 30-day increments each year. Work release privileges were granted.

He was fined $4,500 plus court fees, with $3,000 of the fine stayed. He must complete chemical dependency treatment and a cognitive skills program and submit to drug and alcohol testing at the request of his probation officer.
