Wrestlers split in Moorhead triangular
DETROIT LAKES - The Detroit Lakes wrestling team finished with a split in the Moorhead triangular Thursday, downing the host Spuds 46-16, while falling to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 34-24.
With the midpoint of the season upon the Lakers, there was a bit of leveling out in the wrestlers' performances, said DL head coach Rob Ullyott.
"I thought we wrestled flat," Ullyott said. "Against DGF, there were a lot of toss-up matches I thought heading into (Thursday), but give credit to them, they took the majority of those matches."
The Lakers rebounded with a win over Moorhead, as DL won 10 of the 14 matches.
"We still were a little flat and it didn't look like we wrestled with a lot of emotion," Ullyott said. "Our kids have been doing a good job hanging in their matches and not giving up bonus points, but there just have been a lot of mistakes made."
DL dominated the middleweights against the Spuds, winning the 130 through 140-pound classes, then taking four consecutive matches after the 145 division.
Mike Bellefeuille and Brandon Baker kept the Lakers close early on, winning their 112 and 119 matches with decisions.
Travis Kienitz pulled out an 8-5 overtime decision over Rafael Rositas at 130 to pull DL to within 10-9.
"Travis won a tough overtime match there, he's been wrestling well," Ullyott said of Kienitz.
That was followed by Justin Tweeton posting a 12-1 major decision at 135 over AJ Weeler to give the Lakers a 13-10 edge.
An injury default by Moorhead's James Stetz against DL's Garrett Foltz put the Lakers in control 19-10.
After a Moorhead decision by Nick Cullom over Josh Tweeton and a Spud forfeit at 152, DL sealed the deal with three straight wins by Nate Duchene, Ben Gailfus and Brandon Johnson -- two being falls by Johnson and Duchene.
At 215, Moorhead's Mark Wychor defeated Alfonso Pulido 12-3, and Justin Holm recorded the pin at heavyweight over Mark Jones.
DL had five victories over the Rebels in the loss to open the triangular, with each of Holm, Kienitz and Bellefeuille going 2-0 on the night.
Ullyott credited Holm for being a solid bookend at heavyweight, despite being a first-year wrestler.
"Justin has improved tremendously over the season," Ullyott said. "His biggest assets are his speed and strength and he is very quick on his feet."
Josh Tweeton was also a victor at 145 with a pin on Heath Knapper, while Matt Morris won by forfeit at 125.
"DGF just wrestled aggressively and we didn't," the DL coach said.
The Lakers will take part in a quad-tournament at East Grand Forks Tuesday.
