Detroit Lakes icemen struggle in Bismarck; lose in Crookston after Pirates tab big 2nd period

Breakdowns on the defensive side of the ice have contributed to the Detroit Lakes boys' hockey team's latest three-game losing skid.

The Lakers needed some stalwart defensive play against some tough competition, with three games in five days -- but were outscored by a combined 25-8.

"We just have had some lapses in defense and at goalie play the last couple of games," said DL head coach Chris Denardo. "We just have not gotten the pucks out of our zone and haven't beat our opponents to the pucks.

"Also, our opponents are capitalizing on those mistakes, while we are not."

The Lakers had a two-day trip to Bismarck over the weekend, falling to North Dakota's top-ranked team and undefeated Bismarck High School 11-2.

Bismarck Century took Saturday's afternoon game by the score of 5-2, while the Lakers (5-9-0) let a big second period by the home-team Crookston (7-7-0) lead to a 9-4 defeat Tuesday.

DL's offensive attack is producing shots on goal, averaging near 30 a game, but has only produced 3.6 goals per game.

"There are a few things we need to do the rest of the season," Denardo said. "One, is to start finding the back of the net more. Two, we need more consistency at goaltending and defense.

"We can easily take the next four games if we play the way we are capable of, and that would instill some more confidence in the boys."

The Pirates exploded for six goals in the second period Tuesday. DL had three goals in the period as well, but each time the Lakers scored, Crookston answered right back.

Freshman forward Tanner Lane was hard to handle for the Pirates, as he broke out for a natural hat trick -- to up his team-leading points to 28 on the season (14 goals and 14 assists).

"Our plan was to try and move the puck up the ice and when we did that, we were able to beat their defensemen," Denardo said. "We had a lot of breaks towards the net. Tanner did a nice job using his speed and using good angles to score his goals.

"But again, we missed about 10 to 12 good scoring opportunities."

Forward Jarret Buttenhpff finished with four points for the Pirates, including two goals and two assists. Teammate Alex Edevold had four assists in the tilt, while Morgan Terpstra had a hat trick, as well.

Andrew Friesen finished with 40 saves for DL, while the Crookston goalie had 22.

"In the first and third periods, we played right with them," Denardo said. "So that was one little thing we can take out of the game."

Against Bismarck High, it was the first period which did the Lakers in.

Bismarck buried seven goals in the first, converting seven of their first 10 shots on net.

"We didn't play as bad as the score showed," the DL coach added. "The team played fairly decent, we just didn't have a good start against a quality squad. (Bismarck) had five of the best defensemen I have seen."

The Lakers settled down in the second and third periods, as Nate Baker and Lane notched goals. Nate Ginnaty, Brett Provo and Alex Phelps each were credited with assists.

DL was outshot by a 44-15 margin in the game.

Bismarck Century took advantage of their power play opportunities by converting 3-of-5.

The Lakers were 1-3 with their power plays.

"That was one of the first games this season that we had more penalties and Century took advantage of it," Denardo said. "They had a good power play. But we had only two goals off of 33 shots on net, that needs to get better."

The Lakers will face Pequot Lakes (12-2-1) Thursday inside Kent Freeman Arena. The Lightning beat DL 5-4 in the second game of the season.

DL will also travel to Lake of the Woods (4-7-0) Saturday for a 4 p.m. start.
