National Weather Service: 90 percent chance that Fargo will receive major flood damage

The National Weather Service's latest spring flood outlook forecasts a more than 90 percent chance that the Red River in Fargo will see major spring flooding by April 30.

Flood stage in Fargo is 18 feet. The city constructs a temporary dike on Second Street North to protect City Hall when the river is forecast to rise above 31 feet.

Wednesday's flood outlook forecasts a 90 percent chance the river will rise past 30 feet, a 50 percent chance it will exceed 34 feet and a 10 percent chance it will reach 38.7 feet.

Weather service hydrologist Mike Lukes says the outlook forecasts colder and wetter conditions this spring, but he says other factors could change that, including spring rain and river ice.
