Fargo and Devils Lake flooding discussed at Congressional hearing in Washington

Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker before the Senate Energy and Water Subcommittee, which is chaired by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., in Washington, D.C. to talk about flooding along the Red River.

Walaker said there's an uneasy feeling about flooding and what the potential impact it will have on the city this spring.

He said city officials will soon begin meeting on a weekly basis to study the latest flood forecasts and determine what steps will need to be taken to hold back the water.

Walaker said that the rain that's fallen over the last few days has been beneficial because it has melted the snowpack and that water has found its way into the storm sewer system.

He said big question is how high the Red River will go this spring but there are still too many variables to determine that.

The hearing aims to find out more about the flooding potential in the Red River Valley and Devils Lake basin.
