North Dakota Senate OKs $67 million for prison addition, remodel

BISMARCK - The North Dakota Senate this morning passed the bill that funds a $67 million construction project at the North Dakota State Penitentiary in Bismarck.

Senate Bill 2030 includes replacement of a 100-year-old cell house, new medical and administration facilities and more segregation beds for troublesome prisoners.

The bill passed 45-1 and now goes to the House.

Sen. Tim Mathern, D-Fargo, voted no because he thinks prisoners can be held in regional correctional facilities and more emphasis should be put on alternatives to incarceration and crime prevention.
