Seven Jennie-O workers in Willmar are taken to hospital after ammonia leak

WILLMAR -- Seven workers at the Jennie-O Turkey Store plant #5 were taken by ambulance to Rice Memorial Hospital after an ammonia leak around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday.

According to officials at Rice Memorial, all seven people were treated and released.

The leak promoted the evacuation of employees at the Willmar Avenue plant, according to a statement from Pat Solheid, vice president of human resources and administration at Jennie-O Store.

According to Willmar Fire Chief Marv Calvin, the department, along with the county hazardous materials team, was called at 3:41 a.m. The chemical team from the St. Cloud Fire Department was also called to the scene.

About 300 gallons of liquid ammonia had been released onto the floor, Calvin said. The chemical was dissipated and was contained on the Jennie-O property.

Jennie-O staff members were evacuated to safe areas while other staff members and the emergency crews worked to close the value, Calvin said. The fire department cleared from the scene around 8:15 a.m.

The cause of the leak is under investigation, according to a statement released by Solheid.
