Man appears for bad checks

A Staples man made his first appearance in Becker County District Court Tuesday on a felony charge of issuing dishonored checks.

William Merle Slater, 54, of 111 Roosevelt Ave., Staples, is accused of using a bad check to purchase a used 1999 Chrysler Concorde from Lake Park Auto Sales on Oct. 28, 2008, for $2,090. The vehicle was later found abandoned in a snowbank in undriveable condition, with an estimated $3,000 damage.

The felony charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
