Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota issues call for sandbag removal volunteers
Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota is calling on volunteers statewide to help flood-weary residents in Fargo-Moorhead remove over one million sandbags over the next two Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on April 25 and May 2.
"These folks have been through a great deal of trauma and are exhausted," said Cindy Johnson, director of Disaster Services for Lutheran Social Service. "When people stand with others who have been affected by a disaster, their spirits are really uplifted. Volunteers are urgently needed now to help our good neighbors in the Red River Valley."
Volunteers driving by car are asked to meet at the Wal-Mart in Dilworth, located at 1711 Center Avenue West, and take a shuttle that will be provided to the VFW in Moorhead where they will register. Volunteers coming by bus should go directly to the VFW to register volunteers at 2201 1st Avenue North in Moorhead.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, preferably rubber gloves, and dress appropriately for the weather.
Individual contributions from the community are needed to help fund Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota's disaster response efforts.
Donations can be received online by visiting www.lssmn.org or by mailing a check payable to Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, 2485 Como Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55108. Please designate the gift to Disaster Response.
