Red River falls below major flood stage

FARGO - The Red River on Saturday fell below 30 feet in Fargo, the first time in more than a month that the river wasn't in major flood stage.

The Red reached 29.94 feet Saturday night and was expected to continue dropping, according to the National Weather Service Web site.

Flood stage in Fargo comes at 18 feet, with moderate flooding at 25 feet and major flooding at 30 feet, according to the weather service.

The Red is projected to fall to 29 feet by Monday and 24.9 feet by Saturday, May 2.

The river reached 30 feet on March 24 and crested at 40.82 feet on March 28.

Fargo set a record this spring for the most consecutive days in which the Red was above major flood stage, topping the previous record of 27 days set in 1997, WDAY meteorologist Rob Kupec said.
