Frazee will have a big spot to fill along Main Street at the end of the summer.

Gary's Furniture and Carpeting will be closing after 43 years in business. The closing will come after the store liquidates all of its stock. The liquidation sale began Thursday.

Owner Gary Ware said the decision to close came after spending several months pondering his next move.

In a written statement, Ware said the he wants to slow down and spend more time with family, hunting, fishing and also visiting Mexico.

"There's going to be a hole on Main Street," Ware said.

Another motivation was that his son Brikker and daughter Heather are in the insurance business, and would like to keep going in that direction in their careers, and wouldn't be able to takeover the furniture store.

Ware started his business as an 18-year-old when he opened the doors to a store in Park Rapids in 1964, expanded to Frazee in 1966, he opened a third store in Pelican Rapids in 1969.

Selling the Park Rapids and Pelican Rapids operations in 1977, Ware expanded the Frazee location by purchasing the old M & M Diner and the city liquor store location.

Barbara Ware, Gary's wife, said she's spent 30 years working at the store. She and Gary have been married for 27 years.

Gary Ware said he wants to thank the people and businesses in the area that have supported him through the last 43 years.
