Pianist Morben to perform fourth Honors Concert

Ashley Morben, a sophomore at Detroit Lakes High School, was a winner in the Senior A Division of the Minnesota Music Teachers Association State Music Contest.

She will perform Beethoven's "March in C" by in an ensemble group of 20 students in the 74th annual State Honors Concert. This will be Morben's fourth appearance in the Honors Concert.

The event will be at Northrup Auditorium on the University of Minnesota campus on Saturday, May 30, at 7 p.m.

Mollie Kuether, a senior at DLHS, was also a winner in the Senior B Division, but was unable to participate due to scheduling conflicts. Alternates chosen were Byron VanGerpen, a fourth grader at Rossman Elementary School in the Junior A Division, and Ben Thompson, a seventh grader at Holy Rosary School in the Junior B Division.

All are students of Anne Jorgenson of Jorgenson Music Studio.

In January and February, about 4,000 students throughout the state competed in the preliminary contests. From those, 1,800 winners were chosen to compete in the final contest held at the University of Minnesota in March.

There were nine categories set up according to age level. A designated music theory exam is a prerequisite for Intermediate A (ages 13-14) and higher categories. This is part of the MMTA curriculum that integrates theory and performance.
