42 dogs seized after Beltrami County home determined to be uninhabitable

BEMIDJI - Forty-two dogs have been removed from their residence in Hagali Township following a report of animal neglect.

According to a press release from the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office:

Deputies responded at about 12:42 p.m. Thursday to a call from family members concerned about animal neglect and found 42 dogs living in a household occupied by two men.

The home was determined to be a health hazard and was condemned as uninhabitable.

The Minnesota Federated Humane Society has taken the dogs and will work to find them homes if possible.

The owner of the residence, Michael John Bohan, 69, and James Joseph Sweeney, 42, both have been charged with cruelty to animals. They were released from custody following their court appearances.

Responding to the scene were the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff's Office of Emergency Management, Beltrami County Environmental Health and the Beltrami County Nursing Service. The Blackduck Fire Department provided breathing apparatus.

The Sheriff's Office is continuing to work with the Minnesota Federated Humane Society.
