State Legion will meet in Mahnomen

After eight years of applying to host the State Legion Convention, Mahnomen finally got the bid and will host just under 1,000 people from July 15 to 18, said convention chairman Bill Eck, including a scheduled speech by Governor Tim Pawlenty.

Legion auxiliary events will take place at Shooting Star Casino, he said, while the Legion will be at the Mahnomen High School.

The governor is scheduled to make an appearance on Thursday, July 16, although Eck said he still needed to confirm it with Pawlenty's office.

A parade in downtown Mahnomen will take place on Friday, July 17, and other than that, he said, the events mostly consist of business meetings and committees for the State Legion.

"It's really a huge deal for a town as small as Mahnomen, with this many people, it's the size of the town, so it's kind of nice for us to get it. Kind of scary, but nice," Eck said.

Since Mahnomen is a smaller town than other cities that have hosted the event, Eck said they'll have to do some things differently, like putting up tents and serving meals barbecue style, since there aren't enough eating establishments around.

"I think it's going to go real well," he said. "We're proud to have it here."
