Pelican Rapids says 'let's schnitzel!'

Plans are underway in Pelican Rapids for the 12th Annual Oktoberfest Celebration, which will be held Oct. 8-11. Proceeds from Oktoberfest are used toward community beautification projects.

This year again promises to be filled with fun and exciting events for all ages. There will be dances, food, music, walks, runs, bingo, an auction, quilt show, karaoke, wine tasting and silent auction, sausage contest and beer tasting, raffle, kids bingo, contests, street sales and so much more.

Events begin on Thursday, Oct. 8, with an open house at the Pelican Rapids Fire Department from 4 to 7 p.m. A light supper will be served and donations will be accepted. Mr. and Ms. Oktoberfest 2009 will be crowned at 7 p.m. Birchwood Golf Course will be hosting a wine tasting and silent auction from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets include delicious appetizers and a chance to win door prizes. The V.F.W. Auxiliary will have bingo at 6:30 p.m. and again on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m.

Maplewood Veterinary and Animal hospital will be holding an aluminum can drive on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8-10, as a fundraiser for the Ottertail County Humane Society. They will also be accepting monetary donations, pet food, kitty litter, kennels, toys, etc.

A salute to our troops, with Laura Hagen, will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, at the V.F.W. The Pelican Rapids Jingle Karaoke Contest will follow, with regular karaoke beginning at 8 p.m.

Take a scenic drive and enjoy the beautiful fall leaves on the way out to Lida Greens Golf Course, located on Highway 108 east, where Volksmarch will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10-11, and from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. the same dates at Maplewood Lutheran Church, the 5k and 10k races begin at 10 a.m. There will also be an open mike jam session from noon to 4 p.m. in The Loft at Lida Greens.

Other Saturday events include a quilt show sponsored by The Last Tuesday Night Quilter's at the Pelican Rapids Public Library from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and "Al Siegle & Friends" will have a sing-a-long at 2 p.m. Elementary kids can head over to the Pelican Rapids Senior Citizen Center and play bingo, hosted by People for Pelican, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Saturday evening the exciting events all take place at the V.F.W. An auction, with hundreds of donated items, begins at 6 p.m. with auctioneer Rudy calling the sale. Following the auction stay and dance to "October Road." The Oktoberfest raffle drawing will be at 10:30 p.m.

An old-fashioned Sunday afternoon polka party will be held on Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Pelican Rapids. V.F.W. A German dinner will be served from noon to 5 p.m. "Odell Braton" will be on stage from 1 to 5 p.m.

The "Best of the Wurst" Sausage Contest and Beer Tasting event will begin at approximately 1:30 p.m. at Crossroads Corner. Come and sample over 20 different kids of traditional and unique sausages. Be sure and come in early and watch the Vikings vs. Rams football game, a Bloody Mary cash bar will be available and don't miss the "Weiner Wurst" hot dog eating contest.

Buy your button and win Pelican Bucks. When you purchase an Oktoberfest button, which also will serve as cover charge, your name will go in for two grand prize drawings of $100 each in Pelican Bucks, which will be drawn at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, at the V.F.W. and Crossroads Corner. Buttons are available at local businesses or from any Oktoberfest committee member.

Some of the past projects funded by Oktoberfest include the fountain in the mill pond, flower planters, garbage receptacles, Christmas lighting and "Welcome to Pelican Rapids" signage on the north, south, east sides of town.
