Miss Outstanding Teen asking for support in 5k run

Ellie Bachmann was crowned Miss Frazee Outstanding Teen this summer. She is participating in a 5k run/walk Sept. 18 in the Twin Cities and is asking for donations to support child abuse awareness.

Two weeks before the Miss Frazee Outstanding Teen competition in Frazee this summer, Ellie Bachmann got a call from her coach suggesting she try for the crown.

"It was definitely a new experience," she said. "I never thought I would (win the crown) based on the other girls' experience."

That was the first pageant the 15-year-old Frazee freshman competed in, and she said she soon realized it's more than just a crown. She'll make appearances throughout the year, fund-raise at different events and speak with elementary students.

"I had thought about it before, I just hadn't taken that extra step before," she said of pageantry.

But when she took that extra step this time and earned the crown, "I was absolutely flabbergasted. I'm still in shock and awe.

"I was shaking. They called my name and I didn't put two and two together until the crown was on my head."

So with that crown in tow, one of the first things Bachmann will be doing is participating in a 5k run/walk in St. Paul on Sept. 18. Put on by the Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota organization, Bachmann said Miss Frazee Emily Kallis will be joining her on the run.

"I want to spread the awareness of abuse by using my crown," Bachmann said.

Her platform for Miss Outstanding Teen is "There is No Use for Child Abuse."

She said she's had her own experience with abuse and the startling statistics on child abuse made it an easy platform for her to support.

"I can relate to that child, let them know I'll be there for them and support them," she said.

For the 5k run/walk, Bachmann has set up a website where people can donate money for Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota. Her goal is to raise $500.

Bachmann said she will also be raising awareness on her platform at local events, and she's looking forward to speaking with younger students in the school. Another event she's already looking forward to is the Miss Minnesota Outstanding Teen competition.

Not certain if she'll continue with pageants, Bachmann is going to enjoy her year and the fun and perks that come with it.
