Major storm possible Thursday through New Years Eve

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The National Weather Service says a strong storm system is becoming more likely for Thursday through New Years Eve, although its exact track remains uncertain.

"This storm has the potential to produce significant snow accumulations and blowing snow Thursday through Friday," the NWS office in Grand Forks stated on its website. "In addition, some freezing rain is also possible in the southern Red River Valley Thursday. This storm may hamper holiday travel across the entire region on New Years Eve."

Temperatures are forecast in the mid-20s today through Wednesday for Fargo-Moorhead. Thursday's forecast calls for a high of 31 degrees with a 60 percent chance of snow and freezing rain.

The weather is expected to turn colder this weekend, with forecasted highs of near 6 degrees on Saturday and near 8 degrees on Sunday.
