Backyard Project on schedule

the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Backyard addition is on schedule, and construction will move indoors next month.

Things are humming right along for the new Backyard addition to the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center.

"Everything is going great, we're right on schedule," says DLCCC CEO Stewart Omberg.

Comstock Construction of Fergus Falls is the main contractor on the $2 million project.

Three weeks ago, workers were out hanging steel in 20-below weather, getting the skeleton of the structure up.

Today, masons are fighting the wind and cold, putting up the brick walls.

Once that is completed, more steel will be brought in, at which time workers will be able to fully enclose the new addition.

Omberg says if all goes as planned, they'll begin work on the interior by the middle of March.

"That will take a few months, and then it's time to bring in the play structure ... hopefully by June," he says.

The 6,000-square-foot addition will include a playland, a youth gymnasium, an interactive fitness area, and a new section for free weights and cardio.

Once all the fun stuff arrives, Omberg says it will probably be another month before the community will be able to starting playing in its new Backyard, set to open in late July.
