Waubun has old faces in new places

For well over 30-plus years, John "Bomber" Clark was the head man on the sidelines during Waubun football games.

This season, it's round two for the Bombers to be led by a Clark -- just not John.

John's son, Paul, was hired on by Waubun in late July to take over the head coaching position for the Bombers, but dad isn't in retirement anymore, either.

Paul brought John "Bomber" Clark back to be the defensive coordinator and with how young the Bombers are this season, plenty of coaching will be needed.

"We are very young with only three seniors out," Paul Clark said. "But the team is picking up my concepts."

The Bombers will be a mystery coming into the season with plenty of new players at new positions. But Clark believes it can be a team which progresses well through the season.

Senior running back Sam Lerud is back and will be the core players this season after a solid junior campaign in the backfield.

"He will be everything for us," Clark said.

At quarterback, junior Ryan McArthur will take the snaps, while senior Alex Kent will anchor both lines.

"Alex is a big boy and will be a vital player on the offensive line," Clark said. "(Junior) Drake Kier is also a nice surprise for us on the line."

With Joe Tieken added to the line, the Bombers will have plenty of good size in front of Lerud.

That will be crucial, since Clark is installing a run-heavy offense.

"We'll be a rushing team with some play action," the Bomber coach said.

Paul Clark was the head coach in Warroad for the past three years, but was let go this past summer. Fortunately, for him, the Waubun head coaching job opened when Jason McCloskey left the position.

"Nine man football is new to me, but I'm learning in each practice," Clark said. "I bleed Bomber Blue, so I'm lucky to be here. Having (John Clark) on staff gives us instant credibility, since he knows everything about the kids and about Waubun football."

Defensively, the Bombers will be much like on offense, inexperienced. But with the defensive line having some size and experience, it will be based there.

"We'll take it step by step and we'll be better each week," Clark stated.
