When Rich and Jodie Johnson's daughters hit their teens, they decided they needed more space in their house. Luckily, they happened to know of the perfect fit.

Rich built the house they lived in on Muskrat Lake south of Detroit Lakes, and then he built a spec house for his dad to sell just down the road. After it had been on the market for nearly two years and hadn't sold yet, the family decided to move into the spec home and put theirs up for sale.

"It suited our needs better," Jodie said. "There's more space, and downstairs, there's a big area for them," she added, referring to the couple's teenage daughters.

They moved in about a year and a half ago, located on Dunton Locks Lane, and are enjoying the open floor plan, and the floor heating.

"It's really nice because the floors are warm in the winter," Jodie said.

A few steps into the Johnson home features an large, open kitchen, living room and dining room area. The living room showcases a gas fireplace, the dining room is surrounded by win-dows, and the kitchen has state-of-the-art appliances.

The microwave is hidden away in a drawer. The dishwasher is compartmentalized so only one has to be operated when there's no need to run the entire dishwasher. Push a button and the vent behind the cook top appears from within the counter.

The kitchen also has hickory cabinets and granite countertops.

The house was built to be handicapped accessi-ble.

"It backs right up to the county park, so there's not going to be anyone building behind us," she said.

They enjoy all the windows and all the wildlife they see in the backyard. So much so, she said, that they haven't even bothered to hang curtains yet.

"We just like all the light."

Besides the great room, the main level of the home features an office, the music room -- members of the family play various instruments, including piano, guitar, trumpet and saxophone -- a laundry room, a bathroom and the master suite.

Being able to enjoy a breath of fresh air is easy: the master bedroom opens onto a deck. The bathroom hosts a walk-in shower with glass sides, and the master bedroom also features a walk-in closet.

Down the stairs -- where the railings are unique with cut-outs inserted into the wood design -- are the two girls' bedrooms, a bathroom and a large area used for a family room and a place to gather with friends.

"They can have friends over and watch movies. It's really nice for the kids," Jodie said.

There is also a patio off the walkout basement.

Though the house is wired for surround sound throughout, the family just uses it in the basement for the movies.

Whether they watch together as a family or the girls are downstairs with friends, the Johnson home is beautiful and large, but centers around their family.

"Our house is definitely very lived in," she said.
