FARGO - Sanford Health on Thursday opened its new $1.3 million Plastic Surgery Center, which officials said will emphasize comfort and confidentiality.

The 7,280-square-foot center at 2801 S. University Drive was designed with the patient experience in mind, said Dr. Diane Schmidt-Krings, one of the center's two surgeons, along with Dr. Pamela Antoniuk.

Because Fargo is a relatively small community, Schmidt-Krings said, the facility has two different reception areas as well as a backdoor to give patients a sense of confidentiality. At the same time, she said, the cosmetic surgery center also has an open feel.

"We didn't want it to feel like another medical office," she said. "The designers and architects were great to work with. The whole concept of what we were trying to do, they brought it to life for us."

With nine patient rooms and two procedure rooms, the center will involve procedures such as breast reconstruction, breast lifts and augmentation, liposuction, brow and eye lift and many others.

"Plastic surgery most of the time is thought of the 'fluff doctors'," Antoniuk said. "But we do so much more from a reconstructive standpoint."

The center was also designed with an eye on the future, Antoniuk said.

Because plastic surgery involves so many different types of procedures, the center may need to add new staff that specializes in a specific field, she said. The new facility includes space for expansion.

"It's an exciting time for Sanford," she said. "For such a long time, this is the one department that they did not have."
