Run 'Round the Rose

Take in a scenic view of Rose Lake while getting in a 12-mile run

Run around Rose Lake on July 14 with the 5th annual Run 'Round the Rose race.

Whether it's for the scenery, the exercise or to raise money for the American Diabetes Association, there are several categories for runners, depending on how far they wish to run.

The 12-mile race can be run alone or in teams of two or four people who split the running into six- or three-mile legs.

Registration begins at 6 a.m. in the parking lot of Spanky's Stone Hearth Restaurant, located on County Highway 4 between Frazee and Vergas. The race begins at 7 a.m. Entry fees will go to raising funds for the American Diabetes Association.

Organizer Jim Jensen owns a lake home on Rose Lake, and he and his family have been spending their summers in Minnesota since he was a child.

He is a seven-year veteran of the National Football League, playing for the Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys.

His family has had a summer home on Rose Lake since the late 1960s, and that's why he chose that location for the race.

Jensen got involved with organizing the race and donating the funds to the American Diabetes Association in memory of his mother, Lois, who lived with diabetes her entire adult life. Each year the family chose mid-July to visit the Rose Lake area because that was his mother's birthday.

Post-race refreshments will be available when awards are given out at Spanky's. The awards are for Overall Champion; Open Male & Female gold, silver, bronze; 2- and 4-person relay teams gold, silver, bronze; and Masters Male & Female gold, silver and bronze.
