Street closures in DL
Between the crowds that show up for the Independence Day holiday in early July and the crowds that show up for WE Fest in early August, it's not easy to find a good time for street construction in Detroit Lakes.
This in between time isn't perfect either, what with the Jaycees Water Carnival July 13-22, but there is no perfect time and street construction work is now underway.
"It's tough to schedule, but we do our best," said DL Public Works Director Brad Green.
North Roosevelt Avenue, from Eighth Street to Highway 34, is closed for a construction project that started Monday.
The closure is expected to last approximately two weeks.
The rest of Roosevelt Avenue and other streets will see delays and occasional spot closures as mill overlay work is done.
Street improvements are now underway on portions of Roosevelt Avenue (Park Street to North Shore Drive) Summit Avenue (Holmes Street to Willow Street), Reynolds Street (Summit Avenue to Rossman Avenue), and Rossman Avenue (Reynolds Street to Holmes Street).
This work is also expected to last about two weeks, Green said. These streets will remain open to traffic during this time, but the work may result in traffic delays -- so motorists are encouraged to use other routes.
West Avenue from Bergen's greenhouse to State Street will also see traffic delays and spot closures as major grinding and patching work gets underway this week.
Knife River Materials of Bemidji is doing the grinding, milling and asphalt work, using specialized equipment.
"They move really fast with milling, prep it, and come in with asphalt," Green said.
"In this town, we try to be very conscious of busy periods," he added. "We waited until after the Fourth and we want it done before WE Fest."
