Extension open house,

Okeson farewell

The Becker County Extension Office hosts an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. in their new location, 1120 8th St. SE, Detroit Lakes (in the same building at the Becker County Workshop). Refreshments will be served. Also say farewell to 4-H Program Coordinator Mickey Okeson as she is retiring.

Cowboy action shooting

White Earth AIS seminar

The White Earth Natural Resources Department, along with the Minnesota DNR, conducts an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) seminar from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Shooting Star Casino Event Center in Mahnomen.

Wildlife Excursion

Tamarac Wildlife Refuge hosts a wildlife excursion at 10 a.m. Explore the refuge with a knowledgeable guide. Search for wildlife and learn about the cultural and natural history of Tamarac. Meet at the Chippewa Picnic Area 3 miles past the visitor center on County Hwy 26.

Talk of the Town

Talk of the Town begins at 9 a.m. in the Cormorant Community Center. The program is Linda Wiedewitsch, hearing and service dog trainer. The event is free, and coffee and cookies will be available.

Haley Sue Crandall benefit

A benefit for Haley Sue Crandall is from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Grace Community Church of Osage. Haley, 2, was born with three heart defects and will have open heart surgery on Aug. 21.

Saturday, Aug. 18

Shelter Fest

The Humane Society of the Lakes hosts its annual Shelter Fest beginning at 6 p.m. at Hotel Shoreham. The event features musician Dan Holt, a raffle and a silent auction, with all proceeds benefiting the humane society.

Twisted Stitchers

Marlene Meyer will be demonstrating the Nifty Knitter (those plastic round looms) from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Third Street Market, Park Rapids. For further information, contact Kathy at 732-0978.

Old time variety dance

An old time variety dance is from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Frazee White Pine Room. Music is by the Dennis Ficor Show of Regina, Saskatchewan.

Garden Quilt Show, Tea

The 6th annual Garden Quilt Show and Tea is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 4020 4th St., Lake Park. The quilt show and tea helps raise money for Families Forever Scholarships. There will be tea and treats, live music, door prizes, some of the most beautiful quilts to vote on and gardens to walk through and enjoy. A limited amount of full lunches are available for sale, along with gift baskets, bags and other gift items.
