Dick Beardsley Run
The 17th Dick Beardsley ½ marathon and 5K run/walk offers a lot to its participants -- from the opportunity to run around the lake, to the opportunity to run with "legends."
The event is Sept. 8 in Detroit Lakes. The ½ marathon and 5K both start near the Pavilion. The ½ marathon course loops through downtown Detroit Lakes and around Detroit Lake.
There is also a Kids 1K at 11 a.m., open to kids age 12 and under.
The night before the race from 6 to 7:30 p.m., there will be a spaghetti feed at the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center. The cost is $10, but $5 for ages 4-12 and kids age 3 and under eat free. The spaghetti feed will feature this year's Dick Beardsley "guest legend" runner, as well as Dick Beardsley himself.
This year's running legend is Carrie Tollefson. Tollefson was born and raised in Dawson, Minn. In high school, she won 13 state championships, setting a national record of five consecutive individual cross country state championships, plus eight state track championships.
In college, Tollefson won five NCAA championships individually and was a member of the 1999 NCAA Cross Country Championships team. In 1998, she was named the NCAA Indoor track athlete of the year and was the first person in NCAA history to win both the 3K and 5K runs.
As an Olympian and three-time national champion, Tollefson lives and trains in Minnesota.
Beardsley is a former Detroit Lakes resident, and has been honored many times for his running, including being an Olympic Trials Marathon qualifier in 1980 and 1988, and being the Guinness Book of World Records' only man to have ever run 13 consecutive personal bests in a marathon.
Beardsley is also the founder of the Dick Beardsley Foundation, which raises money to support recovering addicts of chemical dependency. A portion of race entry fees from the event goes to the Dick Beardsley Foundation.
Beardsley and Tollefson will speak at the spaghetti feed at 7:30 p.m.
The awards ceremony for the ½ marathon and 5K will happen after the Kids' Run.
