Give to Max: Boys, Girls Club, Humane Society
A couple more area organizations are looking for some extra donors tomorrow (Thursday).
The Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes and Perham and the Humane Society of the Lakes are both participating in Give to the Max Day.
When giving online during this day, the bonuses include a match to your donation provided by local supporters, a "Golden Ticket" for $1,000, which is randomly selected every hour, and the chance win $10,000 for the shelter which will be drawn at the end of the day.
To increase the chances of winning, the Society is looking for more volunteers to make donations during odd hours.
"It's worth setting my alarm for a chance to earn extra dollars to help feed and shelter homeless pets," said Kelly Blackledge, a Humane Society volunteer. "A few volunteers have already agreed to donate at the 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. hours. I'm hoping we can encourage more people to donate during these wee hours of the morning when there will be less competition."
There is a $10 minimum, and you can donate as many times as you like. The more times you donate, the better the chances your donation is chosen.
The Humane Society of the Lakes shelter operates entirely on donations. There is room for 25 cats and 25 dogs and the shelter is nearly always at its maximum capacity. It costs about $125 just to get a pet ready for adoption and another $85 to feed all the animals each week.
Give the Max Day dollars will help feed and care for the homeless animals of Becker County into the cold winter months.
Boys and Girls Club of DL, Perham
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Detroit Lakes & Perham is one of many nonprofit organizations throughout the state that will once again ask Minnesotans to display their record-breaking generosity by donating to their favorite charities online at www.GiveMN.org during the fourth annual "Give to the Max Day" on Thursday, Nov. 15.
"Each year we've participated, the community's support has increased. In 2011, Give to the Max Day helped us raise over $2,000 to support youth in Detroit Lakes & Perham that attend our after school and summer programs," said Sue Trnka, the Clubs' resource development director.
This year, the Detroit Lakes & Perham Clubs hope to raise more than $6,000, thanks to a generous $3,000 match offered by a local donor.
"Every gift up to $3,000 made to our Clubs on Give to the Max Day this year will be matched dollar-for-dollar, meaning that everyone who gives $10 is actually helping us raise $20," said Trnka.
In addition, the clubs are using Give to the Max Day as an early opportunity for community to give to its annual giving campaign, It Just Takes One, which begins on December 1.
If donors wish to designate their gift to a specific Club unit, they can do so when setting up their online donation.
Boys & Girls Clubs focus on three key areas designed to help youth succeed: academic performance, good character and leadership, and healthy lifestyles. All gifts made will help Detroit Lakes and Perham Clubs provide youth with tools and resources related to these achieving goals, including after school homework help, physical activities, arts and crafts, social development, and one-to-one mentoring opportunities.
Since launching in 2009, donors have given more than $50 million to over 6,700 nonprofit organizations on GiveMN.org. Meanwhile, other states and organizations have adopted the "Give to the Max Day" concept, having seen its success in connecting donors with charities.
In 2011, over 47,000 donors in Minnesota contributed $13.4 million was raised for 3,978 Minnesota nonprofit organizations, whose missions range from feeding the hungry, to protecting the environment, to promoting the arts.
"Contributions to our Club on Give to the Max Day have an immediate impact on the local children and families we serve," said Pat Petermann, executive director of the Detroit Lakes & Perham Clubs. "This school year, an average of 200 children attend Club programming each day both of our Club units combined. Just as our families need us to be here for their kids, we need the support of the community to make it possible to continue offering the services we do."
Anyone wishing to contribute to the Club on Give to the Max Day can do so by logging on to www.bgcofdl.org and clicking the "Donations" link or by logging on to www.GiveMN.org and searching for Boys & Girls Club of Detroit Lakes. Give to the Max Day runs from midnight until 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 15.
