Raider cagers striving for improvement

Jumping up the Pine to Prairie Conference standings will be the target for the 2012-13 Lake Park-Audubon boys' basketball team.

After finishing 3-13 in the conference last year, the potential of climbing the rankings is high, as the Raiders' depth could be a strength this season.

"We believe we can go eighth or nine deep, with little drop off in talent and skill," said first-year head LP-A coach Tony Greive. "Our goal is to become one of the top teams in the conference. The guys want to host a playoff game and play at Concordia College. With the work the guys have put in, we believe that we can accomplish those goals."

It will start with the experience the Raiders return.

Seniors Andy Erickson (6-1), Nate Renner (5-11) and Wes Jaster (6-1) will provide that seasoning.

Erickson is the leading returning scorer, while Renner brings versatility and leadership, while Jaster will provide consistent play at the post position.

"Wes is a hard-nosed, tough player who can grab some boards," Greive said. "Nate is a natural born leader, who can play multiple positions and Andy brings floor leadership and a scoring mentality."

Juniors Isaiah Pearson (6-0) and Jon Olson (6-0) also give the backcourt depth and the much-needed athleticism.

"Isaiah is an athletic player, who can handle the ball and get to the basket," Greive said. "He will be running the point. Jon has the ability to create his own shot, hit the open shot and run the floor.

"Jon will also be our shutdown defender."

Also in the mix at guard is 6-5 junior Dalton Kohler, who proved to have a killer jump shot, but will be slowed into the lineup after starting the season with an injury.

Jaster and 6-3 post Jordan Stockert will provide the Raiders with a versatile front court. Jeff Ward, a 6-2 senior, will also see time at the post position.

Defensively, the Raiders are working on their man-to-man defense, which hopefully will set up their transition game, Greive said.

The new Raider coach is familiar with the area, since he and his wife, Andrea, grew up here. Greive is originally from Ada, while Andrea is from Fertile.

Greive coached at Hinckley-Finlayson in east-central Minnesota and also was an assistant varsity girls' basketball coach in Waubun for two years before that.

"Having the opportunity to teach and coach at LP-A has been a homecoming for us," Greive added.
