Solid experience to push DL Dance

Detroit Lakes Dance Team: Row 1: Karissa Berg, Brielle Boeckel, Simona Woodard, Sadie Boeckel, Maddie Ramsey. Row 2: Arika Johnson, Kalley Waller, Kayley Jackson, Kassie DuChene. Row 3: Tatum Doppler, Katelyn Johnson, Greta Fritz, Grace Lindquist, Taylor Kohler

Although the Detroit Lakes Dance Team still has a youthful look on the both its Kick and Jazz squads, seasoning from last year should be a factor in a successful 2012-13 season.

Two seniors will lead the teams, along with two juniors, as the Lakers have added more skill and talent to this year's routines.

"We have all the elements to see success this year," said DL head dance coach Britton Ramsey. "It's going to come down to whether or not we can connect the dots.

"We have set goals to hit specific skills and to see our scores improve at each invite. The more time the girls have to gel together as a team, the more likely we will be able to accomplish these goals."

The lead senior duo is Arika Johnson and Kayley Jackson, while the juniors are Grace Lindquist and Karissa Berg.

All four have shown the dedication and hard-work ethic to help lift the Lakers to new heights this season, Ramsey said.

"We are fortunate to have two seniors who have danced in past years," the DL coach said. "I've been very impressed with Grace, Arika and freshmen Greta Fritz so far this year. It seems whatever I ask of them to do, they are able to execute it."

Balance will also be a key for the Lakers, since most of the dancers on this year's squads competed in the section meet last year.

Changes in costumes and the routines also will aid the Lakers in hitting higher goals.

"Our routines this year are really fun and we have brand new uniforms to correlate our themes," Ramsey said. "We are doing an Aladdin themed high kick routine complete with Princess Jasmine inspired uniforms. Lots of color changes happening in formation transitions and really fun music.

"The girls are really excited for this dance. Our jazz routine is a fun, sassy number that girls also have fun with. The choreography allows everyone's skills to be showcased. Both routines require a bit of theatrics so that is something we will need to continue to work on."

This year, the Kick and Jazz teams have been separated, so there were try outs for each squad. There are varsity and junior varsity teams for each division, as well.
