Parrot Heads celebrate 10 years with some fun

Celebrating 10 years of helping others, members of the Lakes Area Parrot Heads helped themselves to a vacation.

On Feb. 8-15, the Lakes Area Parrot Heads hosted the Midwest Region "Belize or Bust 2013" trip to Ambergris Caye, Belize.

"We had 30-plus Parrot Heads from Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Arizona, Texas, Washington, D.C., and North Carolina descend upon Banana Beach for a week of fun," Parrot Head Jim Brogren said.

The group participated in several events while there, including an island toga pub crawl.

"It took us six hours to walk from one end to the other end of town and stop at every place along the way," he said with a laugh. "We had a blast with that."

Everyone had to wear something on their toga to represent their hometown, state or Parrot Head club.

"There were some really creative things, and they had to incorporate a banana into their design. It was a fun day."

Everyone was free to enjoy their vacation as they wanted also, participating in the local carnival celebration, zip lining, snorkeling, touring the Mayan ruins and enjoying a sunset cruise.

"It was an absolute blast. We had participated in 2005, and we had 19 members of our club who went," Brogren said.

He said the clubs work all year long to raise money for their charities, so this was a chance to sit back for a week and just enjoy being a Parrot Head -- and the surrounding scenery of course.

"It was also a chance for us to share ideas, which is kind of nice because we had three club presidents and we were able to exchange information and works with their club and what doesn't. It was idea sharing and it was great."
