Izaak Walton League

The Izaak Walton League meets from 7-8:30 p.m. in the main floor meeting room of the DL library. Topic will be a DVD on conservation and also building the North Country Trail. Ray Vlacek will moderate.

Wednesday, March 20

Larry’s Plus square dance

Larry’s Plus square dance is from 7–9 p.m. in the IOOF Hall, 118 W Holmes St, DL. Roger McNeil is the caller.

Holy Rosary School open house

An enrollment open house at Holy Rosary School is from 10-11 a.m. for preschool, 1-2 p.m. for kindergarten and 5-6 p.m. for all grades. Parents and children are encouraged to come.

Zion Lenten services

Zion Lutheran Church hosts Lenten services at 4:30 and 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Thursday, March 21

Lake Region Garden Club

Lake Region Garden Club meets at 7 p.m. in the Lakes Homes Conference Room.  The program is on canning and pre-serving and will be presented by Judy Fankhanel. Members are asked to bring a canning recipe to share with the group. Guests are always welcome.

Fifth/sixth grade orientation

The fifth/sixth grade student/parent orientation openhouse at the DL Middle School is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thre is a program in the George Simson Auditorium, followed by the ability to tour the building.

Alpha Theta meeting

Alpha Theta meets at 5 p.m. in Holiday Inn, with a social, followed by the Chapter meeting featuring the program “Sharing My Story” by Author Nancy Brekke.

Friday, March 22

Friendly Squares

The Friendly Squares host a square dance in the Century School in Park Rapids. There will be plus workshop at 7:30 p.m., and mainstream dancing from 8 to 10. The caller will be Dan Sahlstrom and Donna Stone will cue rounds between tips. Potluck lunch furnished by the club. All square dancers and spectators are welcome.

Independent music teachers

The Lakes Area Independent Music Teachers Association meets at 11:30 a.m. in the home of Sharon Wesbrook, 18698 Longview Lane, Detroit Lakes. All area Independent Music Teachers are invited to attend. For information, or directions, call 844-6009.


First elected in 2002, Rep. Urdahl is an author and retired educator. He has written a trilogy about the U.S. – Dakota Conflict, also known as the Sioux Uprising. The Uprising started across the lake from Rep. Urdahl’s home and his great-grandfather buried the conflict’s first five victims. He will be speaking at 7 p.m. in the DL Library.

Holy Rosary Lenten service

Knights of Columbus host Friday night fish fries during Lent on. It is from 5 to 7 p.m. in Holy Rosary Parish Center. Adults are $8 and students under 12 are $5.

Sacred Hearth Lenten dinners

Knights of Columbus Frazee Council 12581 annual Lenten fish dinners is from 5-7 p.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Frazee. Adults are $8, kids (7-14) are $5, and 6 and under are free. Everyone is welcome.

Easter egg hunt

The Detroit Lakes Women of Today hosts an Easter Egg Hunt at 10 a.m. in the Washington Square Mall.  This event is open to children ages 8 and under. Come meet the Easter Bunny too. There will be four separate hunts by age group (0-2, 3-4, 5-6, & 7-8).  Eggs will be restocked between each hunt. For questions or more information, visit or

Irish fundraiser

The Humane Society of the Lakes 6th annual Irish fundraiser starts at 6 p.m. in the Speak Easy in Detroit Lakes. There will be live music by the Irish band Poitin, a raffle, a silent auction and many games to play. Tickets are $10 and are available at the shelter before the event and at the door the night of. Spring Equinox hike

A Spring Equinox Hike, sponsored by the Itasca Moraine Chapter of the North Country Trail Assoc., is at 2 p.m. starting from the south entrance of Itasca State Park and go west to the Ozawindib trail and back, approximately two miles.  Bring snowshoes if conditions warrant.

Native American Week

Native American Week celebration includes: Monday, March 18 — NAWeek Committee Planning; Tuesday, March 19, 5:30-7 p.m., M State cafeteria — Potluck opening ceremony/K-5 Young Artist/Writers Awards Night; Friday, March 22, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., M State cafeteria — Quiz Bowl Competition with 6-12 young artist/writers Awards; Saturday, March 23 — DL is hosting the Minnesota State Drum and Dance Competition, Middle School. Grand Entry is at noon.

Women’s program

Essentia Health St. Mary’s Foundation will be hosting a program for women only about lagging libido and what can be done to treat it. It is Thursday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m. in LaBarista. Hope Mathern, D-NP, and Michelle England, MSW, will be discussing physiologic, psychological and relationship factors which affect libido in women and solutions for improving libido.
