Outstanding senior nominees sought

Do you know of a senior citizen in your community who enjoys spending their time volunteering at local events, in nursing homes, with hospice, or with any number of other nonprofit and service organizations in the community?

Nominations are now being sought for the 2013 Becker County Outstanding Senior Citizen awards.

The award recognizes senior citizens who have made outstanding contributions to their community since reaching age 65. Nominees must be 70 years of age by June 1, 2013.

Though the title of the award is “Outstanding Senior Citizen,” program coordinator Karen Lenius says it might better be termed “Outstanding Senior Volunteer.

“It’s entirely based on volunteerism,” she said.

Though many people hesitate to step forward and be recognized for their volunteer efforts, Lenius said, the Outstanding Senior Citizen program is more a celebration of the spirit of volunteerism than it is about individual accomplishment.

“It’s a chance to say thank you to our volunteers,” she added.

One man and one woman will be chosen to be honored at the Becker County Fair on Thursday, Aug. 9 — the same as has happened every year at the fair since 1973, when Georgianna Selkirk of White Earth and John Dahl of Detroit Lakes were the award winners.

Last year’s winners were Vivian Lee and Charles Korinta.

The Outstanding Senior program will be celebrating its 40th anniversary at the fair this year, noted Lenius.

County level award winners will be eligible to compete for the title of Minnesota’s Outstanding Senior Citizen during the Minnesota State Fair; they will be offered a free trip to the state fair for the recognition program, which takes place during Senior Day on Aug. 29.

Nomination forms are available from Karen Lenius at 281-847-1385 or, or at Mahube-Otwa Community Action Agency, 1125 West River Rd., Detroit Lakes.
