Crime and Accidents

The following items were taken from reports at the Detroit Lakes Police Department and Becker County Sheriff's Office:

Friday, Feb. 12

• At 10:20 a.m. a Detroit Lakes man reported the theft of sunglasses from his unlocked vehicle on the 600 block of West Lake Drive.

• At 10:36 a.m. a man on the 1100 block of Summit Avenue reported his car had been rummaged through overnight. He said stuff was thrown all over, but nothing appeared to be missing.

• At 11:43 a.m. police and firefighters responded to Oak Crossing nursing home at St. Mary's Innovis to investigate the smell of natural gas. It was determined that there was no leak and everything was OK.

• At 12:44 p.m. an accident with possible injuries was reported on Highway 10 near Perkins restaurant.

A black 2002 Lexus driven by Terrance Charley Holter, 65, of Bemidji was westbound on Highway 10 in the acceleration lane from Highway 59. He swerved across several lanes trying to get to the turn lane for Morrow Avenue.

The Lexus sideswiped a red 1999 Dodge RPC, driven by Brian Neil Beto, 30, of Detroit Lakes, which was also westbound on Highway 10. Holter said he was trying to get to Perkins and didn't see the other vehicle.

Beto said the Lexus came across several lanes and hit his Dodge fairly hard, even though he swerved at the last minute to try to avoid the collision.

A passenger in the Dodge, Cynthia Jeane Corbitt, 30, was taken to St. Mary's Innovis hospital by private vehicle.

A passenger in the Lexus, Cynthia Holter, 58, was not injured. Neither driver reported injuries.

• At 12:49 p.m. a woman said she had to swerve to avoid an oncoming vehicle on Klein Road and her vehicle ended up in the ditch. She was shaken up, but not injured.

• At 1:14 p.m. a woman on the 300 block of Langford Street reported the theft of her purse from her car, which was parked at her residence.

• At 2:59 p.m. a motorist reported that three males appeared to be beating up another male while about 10 others watched on snowmobiles on County Road 21 just south of County Road 149. Officers and ambulance workers were on the scene about 10 minutes.

• At 7:32 p.m. Detroit Lakes firefighters were called to check out a blackened electrical outlet in a home on the 13000 block of 270th Avenue. No fire was found in the wall, and the homeowner was advised to have an electrician check the outlet.

• At 9:20 p.m. a blue Mongoose BMX-type bicycle was reported stolen from outside the west end of the mall.
