Grand Forks man loses $20-ticket trial

A jury has ruled against a Grand Forks man who went before the North Dakota Supreme Court to win the right to take his $20 traffic ticket to trial.

Jurors found Tuesday that an officer was justified in citing Roland Riemers in a July 2009 crash in Grand Forks.

Riemers, 67, said he fought the ticket, for following too close, after learning the other motorist's insurance would not cover his medical bills or the damage to his vehicle because he was considered at fault.

Riemers took the case to the state Supreme Court, representing himself, after a municipal judge denied his request for a jury trial.

North Dakota justices ruled that Riemers and anyone else with such a traffic citation have the right to a jury trial in state District Court.

Riemers recently ran for Grand Forks County sheriff but did not advance beyond the June primary.
