Wal-Mart plans won't affect new Fargo store

New Wal-Mart location

FARGO - A new Fargo Wal-Mart Supercenter store being built in south Fargo will not be impacted by company plans to reduce store openings nationwide this year.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that Wal-Mart Stores Inc. would be building fewer stores this year.

Last year Wal-Mart opened 166 new stores and this year will open 125 to 140 new stores.

That shouldn't affect Wal-Mart construction plans in North Dakota, said Ryan Horn, Wal-Mart senior public affairs manager.

The only North Dakota Wal-Mart project involves the $7 million Wal-Mart store being built in south Fargo, south of 52nd Avenue and the Interstate 29 interchange.

The store is located in a 277-acre development called The District at the Lakes being built by Las Vegas developer Larry Scheffler, a Barnesville, Minn., native.

"The store in south Fargo is already well under construction," said Horn. "That's the extent of our growth plan in North Dakota."

The new Fargo store is scheduled to open later this year.

"We will be hiring pretty soon in Fargo," Horn said.

On Tuesday, Wal-Mart said it would cut 700 to 800 jobs at its northwestern Arkansas headquarters.
