Park Rapids tater sale halted, rescheduled due to traffic back-up

PARK RAPIDS -- It was a sale of epic proportions, with an encore in the works.

Lamb Weston/RDO Frozen's semi-annual sale of its signature French fries and other tater products Saturday drew "by far, the biggest turnout ever," plant manager Mic Ryan reported of the 4,700 cases of product - fries and hashbrowns - sold. "It was a hit."

The sale began just before the scheduled 8 a.m. start and by 10:30 a.m. the decision was made to shut down. An estimated 150 to 200 vehicles were turned away, Ryan said. The sale was scheduled to end at 1 p.m.

"The traffic was so overwhelming we were concerned with safety," he said.

Students from the Park Rapids Area High School once again arrived to assist with the sale benefiting the Park Rapids Education and Activity Foundation.

Staff, he said, will sit down with law enforcement to determine necessary safety elements and reschedule a second sale. The date and time will be announced.
