Man sentenced for shoplifting over $2,000 at DL Walmart
Ryan James Sabot, 40, of Moorhead, has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony theft.
According to court records, on Dec. 1 Detroit Lakes police were called to Walmart on a shoplifting complaint. Sabot had wheeled a cart with several items past all points of sale without paying for anything. He had a duffel bag filled with stolen items and was wearing a stolen coat.
When employees tried to stop him outside the store, he abandoned the cart and fled as a passenger in a gold-colored car. Officers quickly pulled over the car and found a total of $2,130 worth of stolen items inside. Sabot was arrested and jailed.
Sabot appeared Feb. 21 before District Judge Jay Carlson, who sentenced him to 19 months in prison at St. Cloud, stayed five years.
He was ordered to serve 65 days in jail, with credit for 65 days served. He must pay a $1,000 fine and $1,165 in court fees. He must get chemical dependency and mental health evaluations, and follow the recommendations. A no-trespassing order was issued for Walmart for one year. He was placed on supervised probation for five years.
